Milford High School is already thrilled about its new leadership teacher, Mr. Dave Gilbert, a special education teacher at MHS. Although the class will miss Kathy Olgeirsson, the previous teacher, Gilbert plans on making this year one to remember. He has already planned a great homecoming dance and there will be much more to come!
MHS Principal Kevin McKenna knew that Gilbert would be perfect for this position. “He is great with kids, he’s positive, and he’s organized,” says McKenna. Those three qualities are sure to make for a great teacher and a great year ahead of us. McKenna also hopes to appeal to more people and students this year to get more people involved. Gilbert’s father, Bruce was a former principal at MHS so Gilbert knows a little about how things are run at the school. He also grew up here, went to school here, and has always been part of the community. Gilbert told McKenna that if the opportunity ever came up to be the Leadership teacher, that he was interested. Sure enough, it did and Gilbert is ecstatic.
While obtaining the title of a new Leadership teacher can be stressful and nerve-racking, Gilbert is staying positive. “I’m very excited about it,” he said. Knowing that their new teacher is so excited about his position really shows his passion for what he is doing. This year will hold more events such as The Staff Showdown and Float Building. The Staff Showdown will be a fun activity where the MHS Staff will compete in a series of games and activities. The class also hopes to get more people involved with the traditional events, like Homecoming. Getting more people involved should make it more fun and a better experience. Gilbert’s plan is to hold events throughout the year in order to keep the spirit up and create a positive experience for the students and staff at MHS. The class is not 100% sure as to what activities they would like to execute, but they do know the activities will be exciting and unforgettable.
Leadership students say that Gilbert has really great ideas and they hope to see them in action. The class was left with less money than they had hoped, but they plan on working with what they have and generating a large income. Anna Shaffer, a senior and two-year Leadership student said, “I’m sure there will be ups and downs just like with any new teacher.” All of the students cannot wait to see what this year holds with their new teacher. “He’s trying really hard and he’s doing a great job,” said Shaffer. It is a change for the students that were in Leadership previously, but they are adjusting to the change and are happy that Mr. Gilbert has been given such an awesome opportunity.
This year is sure to be an extraordinary and spirited year. Staff and students are looking forward to what the future holds with the leadership class and entertaining school activities. “I’m so anxious to see what awesome events we’re going to have this year!” said Shaffer. It is clear that the Leadership class will be working hard this year to keep all of our students involved and the spirit up!
