Milford Softball Makes History

It was early April when Milford High School Varsity Softball started its season. They have players who are referred to as “a doctor” and “a chef.” Milford varsity softball isn’t like any team you might have seen before.

This team provides a variety of unique personalities. They use props during the games to help them cheer on their teammates. Every game they added more props to their collection, including a chef hat, blow up Nemo, zebra, a big spoon, and a pot.

They like to have fun and enjoy every minute of the game.

“ My favorite meal to cook up are dingers, I think its really fun to be a chef and it makes it very exciting,” said Hailey Curtis, referring to her way of cheering on teammates to hit home runs.

Milford Varsity Softball recently won the KLAA lakes Division for the first time in its history. They beat Walled Lake Northern to become division champions.

“ Stepping onto the field I felt very excited and I was ready to win,”said Natalie Herrington.

The softball team had to play Northern a week before the championship game and lost. Milford was ready to come back and play them again for the championship game.

“Our mentality coming into the game was much better and we all were ready to win,” said Natalie Herrington

The team was ready to go at the start of the game scoring the first runs.

“Going into the game, we had a lot of energy and having props make it more fun and to not be so tense.”, said Koryn Pennebaker.

The softball team has had a very successful year. Going into this season Coach Tom Firman and Assistant Dan Reschke took over for the first time after coaching the program for several years. Not much changed, except having a different head coach. All the girls knew who they were so it wasn’t completely different.

The girls started off strong, showing many teams what they can do.

“ The determination on the team is unreal and I’m very proud of our team,” said Shelby Spangler.

This team has and does many things other teams don’t come close too.

“We have a lot of fun and never take things too seriously because when we are having fun that’s when we play our best,” said Spangler.

The softball team works together and has a lot of outstanding players. This year, the pitcher Natalie Herrington was Athlete of the Month.

“I’m super proud of her and the determination that she has,” said Spangler.

The team goes into every game excited and ready to go. No matter what the score is, you will see them very energetic and they will be using the props.

The championship game was at home against Walled Lake Northern. It was a beautiful day for some softball. Milford came out ready to play and were very excited about the game. Both teams battled really hard every inning.

“ It was a really exciting game and everyone ready to go because we didn’t want to lose to them again,”said Herrington

The intensity of the game was  high. Milford started off the game to a good start to take the lead. Northern came back in the game and eventually took the lead and Milford needed to make a comeback. It was down to the last inning and Milford had the last at bat.

“ Even when we were losing in the game no one got down on themselves, everyone was still pumped up and refused to lose,” Spangler.

Milford was still in the game and cheering as loud as they could. The whole complex could probably hear them.

In the last inning, Milford was up to bat with the bases loaded. Koryn Pennebaker hit a line drive between first and second to win the game.

All the cheering and the intensity during the whole game kept everyone in it.

Milford has had an amazing season making history. More and more people have become aware of what Milford softball can do. Before, Milford wasn’t a team people were always looking at. But this year they have gotten more attention than ever. The Milford softball team has shown many around the area of what they can do and how good they really are. Milford Softball has become a team everyone is aware of today.
