Among Us Review

Lucas Congdon

Among Us is a free-to- play mobile game that was released on June 18, 2018. The game is located in a spaceship on a map called The Skeld. In this game, there are 10 players and two impostors, depending on the settings a player chooses. The impostors are the bad guys in this game, and the crewmates are the good guys. Those who are not impostors are crewmates.

The impostor’s job is to kill as many crewmates as possible and make it seem like he didn’t kill anyone. He also has sabotage tasks. Examples of these include locking doors, shutting off lights, hiding in vents, or setting off the oxygen or reactor. Setting off those rooms makes it so the crewmates have to stop doing their tasks and fix those rooms in 15-30 seconds or else they lose the game. The crewmates main job is to do tasks because if every crewmate finishes their tasks they win. Examples of these tasks are fixing wiring, cleaning oxygen, and shooting asteroids.

Each round ends with a voting system. Players can either call an emergency meeting or report a dead body. There is a chat where players can discuss who they think the impostor is and then vote who they think is the bad guy out of the game. An impostor’s main goal in the chat is to blame it on someone else or lie about their location, but if they were not near them, they can skip vote. A crewmate’s main goal is to blame it on someone who looks suspicious or agree with somebody else in the chat.

Dead people cannot vote or chat because otherwise everyone would know who the impostor is.  There is also a skip vote option if players have no idea who is the impostor . There are two ways in which a crewmate can win, one is if they figure out who the impostors are or the impostor quits. The other way is by finishing their tasks. This rarely happens because some people don’t pay attention to their task or the impostors have killed everyone before you can finish your task. The way the impostors can win is if the crewmates don’t fix the oxygen or reactor in time, or if 50% of the people left are impostors.

When you are dead there are several ways in which you can contribute. If you got voted out as an impostor, you can still sabotage. Crewmates can help contribute by finishing their tasks, but you cannot help with sabotage tasks like fixing oxygen or reactor.

There are several ways in which you can be good at the game. One is being a good impostor. This is by killing people in uncrowded areas, being really aggressive, or faking tasks well. You can be a good crewmate by finishing all of your tasks or blaming it on the impostor when he was clearly the guy who did it. Crewmates can also report a dead body if they walk past one.

There are also skins in this game, and skins are different colored figures. This matters because if someone thinks a skin is the impostor, people will frequently call out that person’s color. The colors of the skins include white, purple, brown, cyan, red, blue, dark green, bright green, pink, orange, yellow, and black.

Even though this game came out in 2018, the game’s popularity didn’t start until the end of Summer 2020. It started when a twitch streamer by the name of Sodapoppin started streaming it in July. Over the next couple of months more streamers started streaming it and then people started playing it. There were also lots of memes involving the game over social media around September. By the end of September the game had 1.5 million downloads. It also allows you to interact with people without talking in public, which helps during the pandemic.

Many Milford students enjoy this game. “I like the game and it is better to be the impostor,” Joshua Raya says. “It’s a fun game but it is hard to trust people,” said Ethan Young.I would rate this game a 9/10. This game is very intense and fun, and it is also easy to pick up and learn, but difficult to get good at. I see this game being popular for a while unless the developers mismanage the game. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes to play video games in large group settings.
