Milford Girls XC: Winning-Winning-Winning

The Girls Cross Country Team won their 5th consecutive  Conference Championship Meet on Thursday, Oct. 17. Grace Harkenrider, Jacie Remtema, Leah Merriam, Skylar Grubb, and Elaina Schwendenmann were all honored as All-Conference.

As is frequently the case at the closing end of the regular season, the girls led the LVC with an 8-0 record.

The girls dominated much of the competition,  but may had some tough competition with Lakeland in second and South Lyon sitting comfortably in third.

This team has accomplished many things over the last few years, winning Conferences three years in a row and winning a state title two years ago.

This strong team is often motivated by senior runner Sophia Huszti, who has a lot of experience with this being her fourth year running under Coach Brian Salyers, who has led the program for more than 20 years. Huszti said she constantly had teammates she could look up to, including her  older sister Olivia Huszti, who just graduated last spring, and Victoria Heilingenthal, who now runs for Wisconsin, a Division-1 Big Ten school. After Heilingenthal graduated, Sophia has now claimed that top spot as a Senior leader.

The new and younger runners such as freshman Harkenreider and Juniors Skylar Grubb and Elaina Schwendenmann, will all be able become knowledgeable of everything that Sophia has learned over the last few years.

This team’s foundation is unbelievable, with all of it being set by Coach Sal; he states that the girls side is, “just new and refreshing, and just for fun,” which is also agreed by Sophia stating,

“My favorite part of the team is the family atmosphere; I’ve come to love the program that Sal has worked so hard at making such a great experience for past and future Mavericks.”

This team is built to win and stick together for many years to come.

Looking forward at future races and opponents, the girls team looks to conquer greatness and hope to frame another piece of hardware next month, with the first big race being Regionals which take place on Saturday, October 26th at Springfield Oaks.
