After losing some early matches, Milford’s boys tennis team is optimistic about the remainder of the season. Coach Rich Kynast explained that the team is constantly improving, a good sign before heading into the crossover portion of the KLAA schedule, which gives them the opportunity to win more matches against teams with similar records.

Coach Kynast only has positive things to say regarding his team. ¨The team has worked well,” Kynast explained. ¨They have bonded through competition, each one of them working towards the same goal. They work to win.¨

Senior Reid Sellers agreed with his coach that the team is getting better.¨The season has gone pretty well as a whole,” said Sellers. ¨We’ve been winning more individual flights than last year. As always, I’ve been enjoying spending time with the guys.¨

Despite the improvements since last year, it hasn’t been an easy season for the boys tennis team, which is currently 1-4 in the division. They´ve been overcoming many challenges in their matches. Kynast stated that the biggest challenge the team faces is their lack of year-round access to tennis. Many other teams within the district have the opportunity to play across all seasons, giving them a competitive edge over the Milford boys who are restricted to just playing in the fall. This is due to the lack of an indoor facility. When weather isn’t permitting, the Milford boys have nowhere to practice.img_1258

Despite facing difficulties, the tennis team looks toward the rest of the season with high hopes.

¨The team builds towards the end of the season, specifically towards tournaments,” said Kynast.

The rest of the team agreed that the group continuously gets better; they’re excited for what the rest of the season holds for them.

¨We will continue to work hard and I hope we can win future matches as a team,¨ said sophomore Alfredo Burbano.

The future of the boys tennis team beyond this season looks bright as well. Kynast has seen growth. “I’d really love for the team to grow to the point where I have enough young athletes to start them on junior varsity and then move them up to varsity as they progress,” he said.

The players have had their futures shaped by the team as well, many of them saying that they will be playing tennis casually in the future.

The Milford Varsity tennis team will continue to work hard for the remainder of their season. Weather permitting, the team will play in the KLAA Conference Championships this Saturday.
