On Oct. 13, the Milford Mavericks varsity volleyball team insured that it would not share first place in the KLAA West, but they would stand on top all by themselves. Brighton, with a chance to share the district title in sight, came out fighting.

After an incredibly long first set, the Mavs won the match, 35-33, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18. By beating the Bulldogs, MMVB clinched an undefeated 10-0 division record for the first time in 12 years.

Many Mavericks had either great performances or even career highs during the Brighton game. Sophomore Megan Wallace had two career highs of 24 digs and also 15 kills. Another Sophomore Mya Zeese had a career high of 45 assists. ¨All the work I have but into volleyball is finally paying off,” said the the beaming Zeese.

Junior Sydney Phipps also set a career high with 10 blocks. “Every day at practice I have been working towards setting this new career high,” said Phipps, “Now I have a new goal of beating it again.”

This was also an important game for Senior Izzy Lee with 15 kills. She hit a huge milestone after tallying her 1,013th kill in her four years on Varsity. “No one told me I was close to 1,000 kills until I was really close to reaching it, but I’m really excited,” said Lee.

MacKenzie Watson and Maddie Appleton deserve some serious recognition as well. As a Senior and the team’s libero, Watson is an important piece to this team. Another gem for the team is Sophomore Appleton who is an outside hitter with a career high of 25 kills in one match.

On Oct. 20th, the team played Walled Lake Central for the KLAA Lakes Conference title. This game was a rough loss for the Mavs, but this is not the end for them. After beating Lakeland in the district semifinals, they will get a rematch against Walled Lake Central  in the district finals at home on Friday at 6 p.m.
