Halloween is approaching faster than you think! Are you ready for tons of candy and treats?
Many people are decorating their houses and buying or making their costumes, while some other people are already stocking up on candy for trick-or-treaters.
But the question for students is whether they will be giving out candy, or receiving it?
Freshman Breanna Plaxton can answer that question. Plaxton said she’ll definitely be going trick-or-treating with her friends this year. She’s going as a chicken, a costume she made by herself at home.
“I’m going trick-or-treating for the next four years! But once I graduate, then I’ll be too old. That’s how old ‘too old for trick-or-treating’ is.”
English teacher Shawn Durso believes high school may be a time to end the childhood activities.
She said teens should be busy with costume parties, hayrides, and haunted houses instead of trick-or-treating.
“Halloween is the only time of the year when little kids get to stay out late,” says Durso. “Let’s let them have their time.”
Senior Shannon Hupp says teens should definitely go trick-or-treating, but believes the age limit for it is 21. She’s going trick-or-treating this year, too, but she’ll still be going even out of high school. “There is no reason why people under 21 shouldn’t go,” says Hupp. “They are still young! They should enjoy it!”
Some cities, such as Belleville, Illinois, have banned teens over the age of 12 from trick-or-treating. Any teen found trick-or-treating could face jail time or fines up to $100.
According to abcnews.com, Mayor Mark Eckert of Illinois said, “He heard from too many single mothers and senior citizens complaining they were frightened by ‘6-foot-tall kids’ showing up at their homes in search of candy.” Eckert then said that that is when the police should intervene.
Even though there is a law against it, most kids over 12 do not get caught or arrested in Belleville or any other town that forbids older trick-or-treaters. Most police have more important matters to attend to than to go around asking what age trick-or-treaters are.
So, what is your opinion on the question “How old is too old for trick-or-treating”? Have you already given up on it? Are you going for the last time? Or maybe you are planning to go for a couple more years?
