The Golden Globes is a well known awards ceremony given to those who have made distinguished achievements in the film industry. The first Golden Globe’s awards took place in 1944, and has since continued on for the past 80 years. This year there were many unique characteristics that set this golden globe apart from the ceremonies in the past. To start off with, every year the outfits that celebrities wear to the Globes continue to wow the audience. Actress Gillian Anderson was recognized in a CNN article for her dress that “shocked the red carpet,” along with many others who had a similar effect on the people watching the awards show. However, the most shocking part of the night was not the nominees’ attire.

This year actor and comedian Jo Koy was chosen to host the Golden Globes, however many did not find his jokes in the least bit funny. The nominees and those watching from home were outraged at some of the comments he made at the show. In particular, the comment on the new Barbie movie and on international singer Taylor Swift rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. The Barbie movie is a new production released in July of 2023 that included numerous meaningful representations of the struggles women face on a daily basis. It depicted how women feel pressure to be absolutely perfect and beautiful all the time while having self deprecating thoughts, the sexualization women experience from men, celebrating girlhood, the happiness and bitterness associated with growing up, etc. Jo Koy referred to the Barbie movie as gaining its popularity because it is “…a plastic doll with big boobs.” This created quite the stir among the crowd because the Barbie movie meant a lot more to so many fans than the physical characteristics of Barbie. 

Additionally, Koy also made a comment about Taylor Swift that left many unhappy as well. He made a joke while hosting the awards show, stating, “What’s the difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? The Golden Globes have fewer shots of Taylor Swift.” This was in reference to the fact that Swift is dating the Chief’s tight end Travis Kelce. Many times when Taylor attends the Football games to support her boyfriend, media reporters catch her to put on the news. However, many argued this was an inappropriate joke to make because Swift cannot control when the media finds her when she is trying to go about her everyday life. All in all, was Koy’s jokes inappropriate or has society become too sensitive over the years?
