The Milford divers made a splash Tuesday, Sept. 24, at a home meet against the Grand Blanc Bobcats. Although Grand Blanc took home the win,Milford’s dive team performed well. Divers Sophie Beck, a freshman, and Maddy Dean, a junior, took second and third in the competition.
Although Milford fell short, one diver walked away with a personal best. Freshman Gina Dettore took sixth but her score was a 129, her highest of the year. Beck also achieved her personal best shortly before this meet, a 189, which is also the current freshman dive record.
“I was so excited and I just hope to break more records in the future,” Beck said. The reigning record holder was teammate Megan Lakkides, who is currently a junior.
Grand Blanc had three divers against Milford’s five. Despite the girls’ hard fight they could not catch up to Grand Blanc’s first place diver who broke the pool record with a score of 227.
International Academy freshman Eden Vansicklen took seventh and Milford junior Maddy Dean took eighth, putting forth their best efforts.
Despite the technical difficulties that took place, Beck excitedly said that she was both, “surprised and excited,” to have taken second place.
“I knew when I did my somersault dive I knew I was going to have a good meet,” she said. However, she also added that it wasn’t her best meet.
The team has earned many achievements this season so far. Dettore stated that the team took fourth in an invitational and that she,” really enjoys seeing the team do well.”
The diving coach of many years Marc Miller sees every meet as a learning opportunity.
After each dive performed, the girls look to their coach for either what they could’ve done better or get confirmation about what they did correctly. Some of the girls also correct their own dives by watching them on a monitor afterward. Being that this was the first meet of the season and that reverse dives were required, a lot of the girls took advantage of being able to do this.
Dive Championships take place Friday, Nov.1, at Milford High School. Come out and support the Lady Mavs as they make a splash for greatness.
