“Letting students voice their opinion” is a big theme for MHS Principal Kevin McKenna when asked about what the new Student Advisory Committee, at Milford was all about.

Seven students and three staff members gathered Friday afternoon to discuss this group and what kinds of feedback they wanted to hear from the students.

“I want to get more students informed and engaged here at Milford,” said co-founder of the SAC, Dave Gilbert. “I want these kids to work with the administration and talk about any policies or issues that they have questions or concerns about.” The staff members made it very clear that they wanted the students to go to other students to figure out what the school is doing well and where it needs improvement. That way, they committee can talk about it the next time they get into session.

The SAC has 2 representatives per grade, all derived from DECA, Student Council, or Leadership class.

“This way we can get a good balance of input from kids in every grade,” said Gilbert. This group gets together at least once a month to discuss policy and ideas. The goal is to get more informed and make sure that the students have a say in the policies.

“Having access to the principal” is point that was brought to the table by McKenna he wanted to get across.. “I want kids to feel comfortable with talking to me directly, rather than going to their teacher and having them tell me.”

McKenna wants to get the students to pass on the information to their peers. He feels like this committee would benefit a lot from direct feedback, and that most of the students would rather listen to their peers rather than a staff member. Doing so, he hopes that in the future it will bring the groups of Milford together, so that everyone is on the same page.

In the end, McKenna and Gilbert want the active groups like Leadership, Student Council, and DECA, to know what each organization is working on so that activity or event that is going on and it becomes more of a tight knit group at MHS.

¨(I want to improve)the student’s experience at Milford High School,” said Aiden Warzecha, one of the junior representatives in the SAC. ¨I want to get ideas from students, so I can bring it back to the meetings to discuss them.”  Warzecha is a part of the Leadership so he really wants to see this change and make this a great atmosphere for all the students. By being a part of Leadership he’ll also be able to get and discuss ideas with everyone in his class about what they think needs to be changed.

The 8 members that are a part of the committee are Aiden Warzecha, Joe Bravo, Paulina Parr, Sarah Schang, Rachel Thompson, Katy Trame, Elizabeth Herdon, and Olivia Mouradian.
